Here’s How The Witcher 3 Might Look
CD Projekt Red’s newest engine is allegedly set to deliver “movie-quality” scenes.
The developer behind The Witcher franchise and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, officially announced today its newest game engine, called REDengine 3. It was developed in house, and it’s said to be designed specifically for RPGs. Studio head Adam Badowski stated the following:
If we look at RPGs nowadays we find two approaches, one which emphasizes the story but limits the game world, and one that builds a vast, open world but hampers and simplifies the story
According to the developer, this engine would be an industry-first, combing both said approaches of the RPGs. Their new engine will allow players to roamĀ a world without any loading screens, immersing them even further in the universe (think Skyrim, but without any of the annoying loading screens that appear every time you enter a house, or dungoeon). It is said that both Cyberpunk 2077 and another unannounced project (more than likely The Witcher 3) are running on this new technology.
The engine is a next-gen-ready solution that begins to blur the line between pre-rendered CGI movies and real time rendered graphics, bringing us closer to the most life-like world ever created in video games
In addition to all of this, the new engine will also feature new face and body animation systems, capable of displaying “movie-quality scenes and character interactions.” The technology uses “high-dynamic-range rendering with 64-bit precision” and also includes a range of post-processing effects. These include color grading and flares from many lights, as well as a “high-performance” terrain system allowing multiple layers to be blended.
To sum it all up, the guys over at CD Projekt Red have also released a new image, which is based on the new engine (see above). Wanna bet it’s from The Witcher 3?
