On April 1, Torchlight II received a massive update. Titled the ‘GUTS‘ update, Torchlight II now has Steam Workshop integration and the ability to create mods using GUTS.
GUTS is Runic Games’ in-house development tool that will allow mod-creators the ability to modify “almost everything about Torchlight II, from item and skill balance, to level layouts, animations, quests, and much more.” Furthermore, Runic Games have added a tool that will convert pre-GUTS mods into the official mod format. The tool aims to “make the transition much easier for our ambitious early modders.”
The GUTS update will allow players to join multiplayer games that have various mods, while a new launcher allows you to customise which mods you want active. Players will be able to filter modded multiplayer games by mod combination in the lobby. GUTS‘ main focus is allowing modded multiplayer games with a minimum fuss.
To achieve minimum fuss, Torchlight II now features Steam Workshop integration. Steam Workshop allows Steam users to automatically ‘subscribe’ to mods and have them instantly available, with no folder removing or any hassle. Steam Workshop will even allow players to subscribe to mods if they happen to join a multiplayer lobby with a mod they do not have.
That’s not all that is in the latest Torchlight II update though. A new set of dungeons can be found via portals throughout the game. Along with the dungeons, players can expect to find new monsters, new armour sets, new weapons, new pets (including the Headcrab), new endgame map content and additional dungeons on New Game Plus modes.
“I hope people find them useful. People are already modding Torchlight II without GUTS and doing really cool things. I can only hope to help them do more, faster, and with less headache. I do worry at times that some people will be let down when they realize GUTSisn’t a “Runic Games General Game Development Kit.” GUTS is very much a Torchlight II content development tool. You can do lots of neat things as long as you want to make them for Torchlight II or a Torchlight II-like game. If someone is looking to make a different sort of game, they should probably look elsewhere.”
“We were working on Workshop integration and we love the folks at Valve/Steam — they’ve been really supportive of our team and games — so, we approached them with a completed headcrab pet and they loved it. It was mostly a matter of timing and trying to unleash it at a point where it made the most sense. We have other things in the works as well.”
Torchlight II is currently 50% off until April 8, 2013 at 10am PDT.
