Report – Xbox 720 Announcement Coming In May

The next-gen Xbox from Microsoft will be announced on May 21st according to a technology blogger.

Speaking on the “What The Tech” podcast, blogger Paul Thurrott claims “So the new Xbox that comes out this year will be just the Xbox…Durango is going to be expensive [laughs], you know, $500, $300 for the subscription model, that kind of thing.”

Thurrott adds the Xbox will require a constant Internet connection to function. “Going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says ‘must be Internet-connected to use’ in the notes.”

Thurrott’s information alleges the next Xbox’s previous plans to have a media only Xbox that excludes gaming, have been halted for the moment.

“We have talked for a while about this notion that there might be another version of the Xbox that was just aimed at entertainment. That device was code-named ‘Yumo’ and they’re not making it. They may make on in the future, but it’s not happening this year.”

Previous rumours had suggested Microsoft were looking to reveal the next-gen Xbox later this month at around the April 24th-26th time frame but according to Thurrott, the date will be coming later than originally expected.

“Originally, they were going to announce this thing in April 24th,” said Thurrott. “Now they’re going to announce it May 21st. We know there are events occuring this year where we’re going to learn more.”

Thurrott also claims to have information pertaining to the release date of the new console which will be November 2013.

“Early November, yeah. E3 is going to occur. BUILD is going to occur in San Francisco in June when they’re going to talk about the developer story because it’s a Windows 8 device. It’s going to have the same, or basically the same, developer tools and developer API’s and all that kind of stuff.”

With the rumours of “Always Online” capabilities and the blocking of used games, the response from fans has been largely negative. Thurrott notes “I think there’s a lot of information to come, but I look at all this stuff that I’ve seen from Durango and I think ‘it’s all positive.’ I don’t really see any bad news here at all.”
