With every complaint about EA that comes out more or less everyday, BioWare Co-founder Greg Zeschuk has stuck up for the publisher he worked for once upon a time.
In the years working at BioWare, Zeschuk reveals how his time spent working with EA was positive but at times the opportunities EA had presented, though good, were sometimes too much to handle. “The best analogy I use, in a positive way,” explains Zeschuk, “is EA gives you enough rope to hang yourself with.
“It was really interesting because we really made all the choices we wanted to make ourselves; these are all things we wanted to try. And that’s something to remember – while we were independent we didn’t have quite the resources we had as part of EA, and then we got to EA and it was like ‘wow we can do all this stuff.’ We had to be really thoughtful about what we wanted to focus on.”
The co-founder of house that built Mass Effect revealed just how easy it was to understand things when BioWare had been working with EA for a while. Instead of the popular consensus depicting EA as a corporate dictator, Zeschuk refutes this idea and instead notes just how liberal EA were with BioWare.
“We were sitting around asking how do we do stuff [and] it dawned on us, you just do it” revealed Zeschuk. “They don’t second-guess you, they don’t say you shouldn’t do that. we had complete control over a lot of it; some fans didn’t like some of it and some of it was experimental, quite frankly.”
“While you’re taking on all these creative risks in trying crazy stuff you almost have to simultaneously focus on the bottom line,” says Zeschuk admitting that, at the end of the day, this was a business and money had to be made. “The top line is not enough.”
Zeschuk goes on to explain how, on it’s own, BioWare had to be a lot more careful in what it did creatively. Whilst risks were made on the creative side, they would have had to have been weighed up against the financial side of things. However, with EA, the partnership allowed the developer to pursue more avenues. “I think that’s something people [have trouble with] when they join EA; they do too much or they do too little.”
Yesterday, EA was named as the worst company in America, a title which is under much debate. EA COO Peter Moore stuck up for the company in an EA blog post in response.
