DEATHMATCH #5 REVIEW

Deathmatch #5

Writer: Paul Jenkins
Cover Artist: Carlos Magno

In this issue the captive heroes and villains have come faced with the chance at freedom as the power source to their prison. If this series has done one thing right up to now and in this issue, it’s that they have consistently given you a sense of urgency here. Where in similar concepts of this story there could be some obvious way to break the rules, there are none here and they have made that very clear. Not only are they losing numbers in battles they cannot avoid, but losing numbers to the many villains the heroes are stuck with mutually and more to their attempts to escape.

What made this issue stand out is that while they had the chance to escape, their own problems are what kept them from achieving their goals. Between mistrust between each other, to personal vendettas, to villains who decide that they want to take revenge on the heroes instead of joining efforts to make their escape swift. Not to mention that while everyone has questioned Meridian, they have more reason to do so now when there is something he’s still hiding from them and his knowledge of the real threat makes you wonder if he has a hand in what’s happening to them all.

Jenkins definitely has something big planned for both heroes and villains in the end and the progression to that point has been well paced for being on it’s fifth issue. Whatever comes next will be a defining moment either in their favor if they can reassess their situation or not if they aren’t able to pull together and find out who is the real threat.
