Is PS4 the Fastest Next-Gen Console?

People like software and people like hardware;  some like style some like ability. Take the Xbox 360 vs. PS3, the Xbox 360 may have better looking games but the PS3′s Cell Processor is a lot stronger than the Xbox 360′s hardware.

However, when you get down to it, it comes down to a matter of choice and preference. According to the website PC-Tablet, they ran a test comparing the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PS4′s hardware. Their complete overview analysis showed the PS4 had better configuration and is overall a faster system with better specs, at least according to the paper of information we’ve all been provided.

Firstly the GPU comparison, shows the PS4 GPU is much more powerful than its competitor. Sony PS4′s GPU has the ability to perform 1.84 TeraFLOPS on contrary to this XBOX one has the ability of 1.23 TeraFLOPS only, which is 30% less powerful than PS4.

According to PC-Tablet, “Both are inspired by 1.6 GHz AMD Jaguar accelerated processing unit, 64 bit processor internal and 8GB RAM. But some difference makes PS4 smarter than XBOX one. In Sony PS4, RAM is faster as it uses 8 GB GDDR5 and XBOX built with 8 GB DDR3 RAM. This increases the bandwidth of PS4 and this extra bandwidth increases the performance up to 90% in PS4.  Although Microsoft tried to increase its bandwidth by adding 32 GB of SRAM but that’s not proved to be much beneficial.”

So, it looks like the RAM is PS4′s key to hardware domination right now. I forgot to mention, rumors show that the Kinect for the Xbox One will take 3GB of that 8GB of RAM, so that may also hinder Xbox’s performance.

  3. There are another things that makes the PS4 architecture faster than XO’s one; a third intern bus for intern data transportation. I will quote an article from Gamasutra that summarises an interview with Mark Cerny (Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/191007/inside_the_playstation_4_with_mark_.php Page 2):

    >> One barrier to this in a traditional PC hardware environment, he said, is communication between the CPU, GPU, and RAM. The PS4 architecture is designed to address that problem.

    “A typical PC GPU has two buses,” said Cerny. “There’s a bus the GPU uses to access VRAM, and there is a second bus that goes over the PCI Express that the GPU uses to access system memory. But whichever bus is used, the internal caches of the GPU become a significant barrier to CPU/GPU communication — any time the GPU wants to read information the CPU wrote, or the GPU wants to write information so that the CPU can see it, time-consuming flushes of the GPU internal caches are required.”

    Enabling the Vision: How Sony Modified the Hardware

    The three “major modifications” Sony did to the architecture to support this vision are as follows, in Cerny’s words:

    “First, we added another bus to the GPU that allows it to read directly from system memory or write directly to system memory, bypassing its own L1 and L2 caches. As a result, if the data that’s being passed back and forth between CPU and GPU is small, you don’t have issues with synchronization between them anymore. And by small, I just mean small in next-gen terms. We can pass almost 20 gigabytes a second down that bus. That’s not very small in today’s terms — it’s larger than the PCIe on most PCs!

    “Next, to support the case where you want to use the GPU L2 cache simultaneously for both graphics processing and asynchronous compute, we have added a bit in the tags of the cache lines, we call it the ‘volatile’ bit. You can then selectively mark all accesses by compute as ‘volatile,’ and when it’s time for compute to read from system memory, it can invalidate, selectively, the lines it uses in the L2. When it comes time to write back the results, it can write back selectively the lines that it uses. This innovation allows compute to use the GPU L2 cache and perform the required operations without significantly impacting the graphics operations going on at the same time — in other words, it radically reduces the overhead of running compute and graphics together on the GPU.”

    Thirdly, said Cerny, “The original AMD GCN architecture allowed for one source of graphics commands, and two sources of compute commands. For PS4, we’ve worked with AMD to increase the limit to 64 sources of compute commands — the idea is if you have some asynchronous compute you want to perform, you put commands in one of these 64 queues, and then there are multiple levels of arbitration in the hardware to determine what runs, how it runs, and when it runs, alongside the graphics that’s in the system.” <<

    Besides that there is are the unified and very fast 8GB DDR5 RAM, that can freely used for graphics, animations, KI, physics, etc. Alone that will (FINALLY!!) bring us a lot more AA (anti aliasing) that ever before; you can see that in the Killzone video demonstration for example.

    Then, as mentioned here, too, it will have a better graphics card.

    There are only two remaining questions:

    1. Will the online experience as good as Microsoft's one?
    2. Can MS can catch up later on with cloud computation?

    Honestly, I don't think so. It CAN'T be as fast as it's rendered (or computed) in the same box; you'll indeed need an online connection all the time; and it is very expensive to have a second "PC" running for every gamer (or a few at once, perhaps) that plays a game that depends on it. But we'll see!

    But I think the PS4 will be the console with way better graphics and effects.

  4. That the Xbox has 3GB of Ram, 2 cores of the CPU and 10% of the total output of the GPU reserved for TV features is not a rumor. That was stated by a MS representative on an interview on Kotaku.
