Activision has released the very first in depth details for Call of Duty Ghosts just a few days before its gameplay debut at this years E3.
According to a preview from IGN, Call of Duty Ghost will only be featuring one playable character thus breaking the franchise’s tradition of having multiple character with multiple story arcs. Instead, Ghosts will focus on two soldiers whom are also brothers who have grown up in the United States after a ravaging “mass event” occurred which, as we saw in the debut trailer, has caused great damage to the Earth. Though whatever caused this “event” has not yet been specified by Infinity Ward, the studio was able to confirm the game is set in a completely different fiction to that of the Modern Warfare series and any past Call of Duty games.
Call of Duty Ghosts will also be dispensing with video-games’ most copy-and-pasted villains, Russians. Instead, the conflict in this world arises from the race to acquire resources and this is where Ghosts South American villains come in. The resource rich South American continent is at war with the resource dry United States and the battlefield has extended onto US soil and in the case of the demo shown, the outskirts of San Diego, California. In the demo, the player must dispatch with a group of enemy soldiers silently. And this is how the newest feature of Call of Duty fits in. The Call of Duty Dog.
The Dog will act as a remote reconnaissance unit the player can use to scout enemy positions and the mutt will be controlled via an iPad-like tablet which, according to Infinity Ward, is a process used today by United States Navy Seals. When used in real life actions, Navy Seals use the Dogs by fitting them with harnesses with periscopic cameras and microphones in which they will be able to relay orders to the Dogs. For silent operations a vibrating collar will be fitted to the Dog and orders will be relayed to the canine. It sounds absolutely ridiculous but apparently it works so there you go.
Instead of controlling the Dog this way, players will take direct control of man’s best friend and attack enemies by going for the throat. The Dog can also bark to distract enemies and draw them out into the open which will leave them vulnerable to gunfire from your allies.
The next demo shown was an under water segment which is nothing new to the franchise but instead of being on rails or a mere set piece, it’s now its own battlefield. Both you and your enemies will have guns which are able to fire underwater and so the battlefield will erupt just as it would on land. Enemies will duck and hide behind cover, there are environmental dangers and there are sonar weapons which are powerful enough bursts of sound to damage the player.
And yes, fish will move out of the way.
Despite traversing to the next-gen, Infinity Ward looks like it’ll still be playing it safe by not mixing up the formula too much but instead it’ll be changing just enough to make it a new experience. It should be noted this is only the single player, the new multiplayer portion of the game has yet to be revealed and as we know, E3 is only next week.
