Ghostbusters #5

Ghostbusters #5 is a major wind-down issue, that establishes where each of the main cast members are after the events of last issue. Admittedly, it’s more fun to see Venkman and the gang in zany action, but this dialogue-heavy issues grounds the characters in the series more than either of the films did.

For me, the character Peter Venkman is sacred, so there tend to be problems I have with the character when not portrayed in the most BIll Murray of ways. The character is sarcastic in this issue, but as a mentor his charm comes off far less than when he is dealing with authority.

However, that problem may be fixed, as the issue sets up a conflict with Peck and Hardemeyer, who mutually dislike Venkman and strive to shut down the Ghostbusters. The non-supernatural threat is appealing, as I foresee the Ghostbusters as prime for comedy in a “renegade” scenario.

This issue also sets up future romantic endeavours for Stantz and Zeddemore, as well as an intriguing possession-type conflict for Spengler. Each solo problem feels true to the characters, without bogging down the entertainment of the series.

Ghostbusters #5 churns out another amusing, and surprisingly deep, installment in the lives of the Ghostbusters. While their goofy, anti-establishment spark is crushed a little by their mentorship role, I see the conflict with Peck and Hardemeyer reigniting their loveable edge.
