WHAT IF? AVX #1 REVIEW

What If? AvX #1

When they say What If? They surely weren’t kidding with the direction this version has taken. Jimmy Palmiotti managed to really wow me with his approach to Avengers Vs X-Men. In some ways I liked the way this played out more than the original. He pulled no punches and was straight to the point where the original had beat around the bushes and really didn’t engage you much in the argument over hope. This was an explosive start and I’m very interested to see what happens next.

The character choice I have to say is the smartest move made in this scenario. Magneto and Storm were two characters who really didn’t stand out at all in AvX, and here they had a prominent role in which shifted this story in a different direction. Nothing felt forced and this really did seem like a natural reaction from all the characters involved, especially them. The art is clean and that makes it more appealing than it already is. I’d hope it remains consistent throughout.

For those who didn’t like Avengers Vs X-Men, I say pick this book up. It may not have a direct effect on the main story, but it’s the story that you deserve because for the most part the original was lackluster. When someone tells you that the end is more important than the content, in this case the content will be just as important because I believe it is in capable hands. Being What If, we are left guessing what actions will be taken and just seeing the different choices some of the characters made in this issue made me believe that this war could go any way possible given the library of heroes who took part and their views on this situation. Whatever happens next this book is worth following.
