Steam Greenlight is one of the perfect places for aspiring game developers to begin their trade. It gives them some publicity, and allows the Steam community to vote for small title games that have caught their interest. It also allows indie lovers to unearth hidden gems that may have gone unnoticed. Here is a list of five Greenlight games that caught my attention and deserve to be pushed further.

Among The Sleep – Krillbite Studios

Among The Sleep is one of my most anticipated games of the year; it looks unique and different from other games. Developed by Krillbite Studios, it is a first-person horror adventure that places you in the boots of a 2-year-old where it mixes a child’s perspective and imagination with the surreal nature of dreams. It is similar to Amnesia in the way of hiding to protect yourself from danger, because, well, what can a 2-year-old do against imaginative monsters? It is heavily focused on the atmosphere and exploration, which will mix some puzzle gameplay as well. At the moment, it is set to release on PC, MAC and Linux. Among the Sleep also recently got Kickstarted, exceeding their set target, so hopefully that will mean more content. You can support this game by voting for it here.

Darkwood – Acid Wizard Studio

Darkwood is a top-down, old-school survival horror set in a self-generated, open-world directed by David Lynch. It features RPG and rogue-like elements with intense combat and an eerie atmosphere. In a nutshell, it can be described as a mix of Project Zomboid, Don’t Starve and Teleglitch. The gameplay forces you to adapt; if you act recklessly, don’t expect to survive. Usually top-down old-school games don’t draw much from me, but this game looks to be different.  The game is set to be released on PC, MAC and Linux. You can support this game by voting for it here.

Satellite Reign – 5 Live Studios

Satellite Reign is a real-time, class-based isometric strategy game. You control a team of four agents, each with distinct and unique abilities collectively battling for control of a fully simulated living cyberpunk city. Fans of Syndicate may want to keep your eyes on this, as the creator behind Syndicate Wars is leading this game. It is being developed by 5 Live Studios and is set to be released on PC, MAC and Linux. You can also help the development of this game by contributing to its Kickstarter page or by voting for it here.

The Novelist – Kent Hudson

The Novelist asks one central question: can you achieve your dreams without pushing away the people you love? The game focuses on Dan Kaplan, a novelist struggling to write the most important book of his career while trying to be the best husband and father he can be. The Kaplans have come to a remote coastal home for the summer, unaware that they’re sharing the house with a mysterious ghostly presence: you. With narrative stories becoming a highlight of the gaming industry, The Novelist looks to keep that trend with a chapter-based game that changes with each choice you make. I look forward to getting my hands on this game. You can also check our interview with the creator of The Novelist. You can support this game by voting for it here. The Novelist will be available on PC and MAC.

Second Chance Heroes – Rocket City Studio

Second Chance Heroes is an action-arcade game that puts you in control of historic characters in the underground Hobo colony full of zombies, werewolves and vampires. You can play with 13 different characters such as Nikola Tesla, Joan of Arc and even Queen Elizabeth I. Myself and Vlad Pintea (PC editor) got a hands-on experience in Beta #3 and it was a thoroughly enjoyable game. You can check out our impressions here. It is set to be released on PC and MAC.
