Sure there is a lot of hype and excitement about the World’s Finest movie announcement, but I think there is also some concerns to be raised as well. Given the divisive reaction to Man of Steel, it seems that they may be avoiding the issues that were seen by those who found the movie disappointing.
The Worlds Finest right now is a bad idea and it is DC/WB rushing to compete with Marvel. It took them 2 years to just do a solo Superman movie and now they are gonna get Batman and Superman made onto the same screen in less than that. They are rushing into introducing the new Batman without properly introducing him into this world. We have no idea what to expect from this one and I can’t see at this moment why we should really care for this new person given he will be sharing time on-screen with Superman. Honestly it feels as though this film will just play off of Batman’s popularity and he will be the only one standing out, which is not right for a Superman sequel. Not to mention the story will be predictable. They are gonna fight, Batman will win, most likely with Kryptonite. Worst of all it will distract from what they need to address from the first movie that people had problems with, mainly superman destroying a good chunk of the city or even killing Zod. Things they said would be explained further in the sequel but I can’t believe them when time can’t obviously be exercised to cover all of that, and there’s a lot to flesh out.
I should also add that it feels rushed because Superman hasn’t become Superman yet, he’s only donned the uniform for about a day in Man of Steel, and they haven’t established what the new Batman will be like yet. They can do some time skip, but even so it will be a cop-out from what happened in the first movie.
Right now I see no way that this really helps them progress towards the Justice League movie when they are just feeding into the fanboy’s dreams right now knowing this is what they’ve been demanding for years. I continuously hear “We’re talking about the 2 most iconic superheroes finally appearing together in a movie”, but it’s just gonna be another Batman movie on top of a Superman sequel.
I can only hope that in time they do address these concerns, but until then I wouldn’t get my hopes so high on this sequel. I should also emphasize that this is also nothing against the movie or the fans, but things that just can’t be swept under the rug because these are things many out there are questioning when they themselves weren’t blown away by Man of Steel.
