During Take-Two’s most recent investor call, CEO Strauss Zelnick dropped a little hint about a possible new entry in the Red Dead franchise:
Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises. Our competitors’ view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent [ones]
And it’s been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that’s the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example
So Take-Two’s view on the franchises of gaming is that, as long as the material is top-quality and well received by the audience, there’s no reason to ever stop.
Red Dead Redemption can very well be considered one of the best games in the history of our industry, so a next generation sequel wouldn’t really come as a surprise. We’ll just have to (im)patiently wait for Rockstar to blow us away, one again.
