Down but never out. This is what I like about Joshua’s writing style for this book. You know the Avengers are going to manage to dig themselves out of the hole they fall in, but it’s about how they do it. It’s a heroes tale, nothing more and nothing less.
Something brought up not too long ago was the thought of making the title Avengers special. By creating a story worth them teaming up, a villain worth their full effort, and this is that story. I think this situation has pushed them further than they have been in the past. That’s what Joshua has delivered and the one thing which has not disappointed. What also did not disappoint was seeing that Tony is not dead. You would have thought so seeing his physical body dead and the cover even assuring you he was, but you would have never guessed that he could transfer his mind or even control machines the way he has. I mean who knows, this could even just be a back-up of his mind he saved for an occasion such as this.
The only issue I found with this issue was the slight fast forward in time since the previous because it seemed that a lot had been happening in such a short time in between. This and the sudden emergence of Human Torch because when I followed that mutant camp conflict, nothing really pointed to Johnny being hurt that bad from it. I mean the redeeming part of it is that it shows how sick Reed is that he would use his own wife’s brother as a weapon for his own needs.
Aside from this I still find myself very much engaged in this story because with everything that has happened so far we are still reaching the climax of this arc. Call it cliche, but the execution is there and so is the intensity when needed.
