Three Phase Interactive has announced Defect SDK, a space combat/construction game that will be releasing for PC, Mac, iPad and Android tablets in 2014.
Players are given a title-based construction kit to create their own personalised spaceship, featuring hundreds of various pieces of construction materials reference sci-fi movies and show from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s. The twist is, your crew will ultimately defect and steal your spaceship. Leaving you in a position where you must factor in how powerful you want to make your original creation, because it will eventually become your opponent.
Three Phase Interactive call this the “Achilles Conundrum”, as players must build a ship that can accomplish the task at hand while considering flaws that can be exploited when the tables are turned against you.
“We wanted to bring the creative freedom of games like Minecraft to the sci-fi genre,” said Drew Morrow, creative director of Defect SDK. “Players will need to build the most powerful ship that they can, while keeping in mind that they will have to face off against it later.”
The single player campaign will see players face off against small ships, all the way to encountering ships the size of moons. Alongside the campaign mode players will be able to share their creations with the Defect SDK community, taking part in procedurally generated mission against community created and pre-designed ships.
Defect SDK will be launching an extensive alpha phase early next year for PC and Mac players. Defect SDK is one of 21 projects that was announced to be receiving funding from Screen Australia.
