Avengers #21 Review

Avengers #21

Written by: Jonathan Hickman

The Infinity War rages on and the urgency to make that final move has never been higher. The final battle for the Marvel universe began and while we face the fall of a Galactic empire we get the rise of a new one. This war has been the Universe fighting against the inevitable, an end which they alone could not change. Yet one could, and she had been with them since the very start.

It’s interesting how up till this very point, Captain Universe has been nothing but a spectator. The one person who has power greater than a god, yet provided nothing more than riddles, clues, and vague solutions. Being Bendis you know that there is more to her, we always did, and it was all just a matter of waiting for that very moment for her to take action. This was that point and it was handled brilliantly. You always wondered what role the Ex Nihilii play in the grand scheme of Infinity as well, and it happened in a burst of light. Bending probability to create a miracle, something which any other person would find rare.

Avengers #21 is that change, that defining moment for this story that is so grand in scope. Funny that even as things are reaching an end, Hickman manages to still hit you with more questions. What is it that Captain Universe lost? Was that her speaking? Or her host? So many questions left and we will be left wondering till the conclusion of this story knowing that this issue ended with things going from bad to worse.
