Bioshock Infinite developer Irrational Games has announced today it will be making dramatic changes to itself as a business which not only changes its focus but lays off most of its workforce.
Speaking today on the Irrational Games blog, studio co-founder and Bioshock series creator said “I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.”
According to Levine, the new model of Irrational Games will be a “smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavour at Take-Two.”
The layoffs at Irrational will be rather heavy with all but around fifteen staff members remaining when the changes have been completed. However, the studio is committed to making sure support is given to those laid off.
Levine doesn’t go into specifics too much about what’s next but says the studio’s new role will be “To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.”
The final piece of DLC for Bioshock Infinite, Burial at Sea episode 2 will be released on all platforms apart from Mac on March 25th.
