Walking Dead – Season 3 Episode 12 “Clear” Review

walking dead

WARNING: Full Episode Spoilers Below

‘Clear’ is one of Walking Dead’s finest hours, providing a very focused story and making some good character progression. Though the main plot progression might have taken a backseat, it couldn’t have been down any better.  I stated last week that this episode will be very telling in how Michonne will be handled in the TV series, I am happy to say I was left excited for the characters future. Not only were we given a more relatable version of the comic favourite, but we were also greeted to a visit by episode 1 hero Morgan. Who sadly, was accompanied by some unfortunate news.

The episode begins strongly with Rick, Carl and Michonne passing a hitchhiker on the road without hesitation. They are finally understanding nobody in this new world can be trusted, allowing them to open up to strangers leaves them open to be double crossed. Acknowledging this, by ignoring the hitchhiker twice was definitely aiming to emphasise that fact. Read the rest of this entry

5 Ways To Create The Ultimate Zombie Experience

The post-apocalyptic and zombie genres are rife throughout the gaming industry; they are genres that many find intriguing.  The world is at an end, the human race is lost and there are constant struggles every hour to survive.  Why is this the case?  Well, that is a whole different conversation for another day, but what makes a game within this genre stand out?

When I think post-apocalyptic, Fallout 3 springs to mind almost immediately.  The open-world setting, the morality system and the ability to do as we please.  Want to take on a mission and then once complete kill the person who gave you said mission?  Be my guest!  It was this choice that makes Fallout so re-playable, not to mention the amazing scope that the game was able to accomplish.  When I think of zombie games though, nothing quite stands out as the upper-echelon, the gold standard of the genre.

Fallout 3 Ghouls were zombie-like

Fallout 3 Ghouls were zombie-like

Zombie games come in many forms, from the co-op first person shooter Left 4 Dead, to the tower defence game Plants vs. Zombies and then the latest game I have been playing, Dead Island.  Now, in some ways every one of these titles has its positives and in all respects are great games, but do they set the bar within the genre?  No, even though they all do something different, none take zombies to the next level.

As I said, my time recently has been dedicated to Dead Island and the entire time I was playing my mind-gears were cranking away thinking about the possibilities this game has to offer.  Not only that, but the ideas it could offer the entire genre.  Dead Island tries so hard to hit all the right marks but sadly technical issues, voice acting, and not defining the message the game wants to send holds the game back.

So what would make an amazing zombie game, a game that stands atop the mountain as the very best?  It needs to take the genre, make some tough decisions and be willing to stick its neck out to really make the game memorable.  So, I have compiled a few ideas that I think would improve on what Dead Island has tried to achieve, in turn making it something that is remembered for decades to come. Walking Dead Season 2 in Concept Stages

One of the biggest surprises of 2012 was The Walking Dead episodic series from Telltale Games, many were unsure how the game would turn out, since their less than stellar interpretation of Jurassic Park. Yet Telltale were able to create one of the best narrative experiences in gaming history, they did such an amazing job they also won the inaugural Game of the Year at Analog Addiction. So to put it plainly, we loved it and we want more.

walking dead

We have been told that a Season 2 of the series will take place and Telltale Games had also stated that players should keep their game saves, possibly to collaborate with our previous decisions? Well from the very little information we know about Season 2, it seems Telltale Games will make sure our saves affect the stories that we encounter in the future.

Redbull UK recently conducted an interview with the CEO of Telltale Games’ Dan Connors, in the interview Connors states the studio is already in early brainstorming stages for the upcoming season.

“Right now we are just starting to form the concept for season two. This all remains to be seen but we are definitely figuring out how to carry the saves over.”

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the experience Telltale Games provided, this information has me very excited. The idea of carrying our saves, with all of our heart-breakingly difficult choices into Season 2 is intriguing. Could this lead into more previous character appearing in Season 2? What main choices will play a vital part to the story? This is all speculation, but the ideas have me eagerly awaiting Telltale’s next installment.

What Type of Gamer Are You?

The gaming industry is a magical place, unlike movies which give you a set story with its own plot, gaming has got to the point where our choice matters more than ever. There are plenty of games that almost completely revolve around our choices, allowing the player to become lost in the world, become one with the character and act the way they want to act. Sure the option for the standard storyline is still there, in abundance actually, but this choice in gaming has allowed us to play games the way we want to play them. These choices make gaming special, they allow us to express sides of ourselves that may never see the light of day and act like our Bizzaro self’s just for the fun of it.

With all these choices and open-ended story-lines, the question remains, how do you play games? The writers and developers give you this playground, but it is your choice on how to tackle the objects at hand.  There are many ways people play games and today I am going to take you through just a handful of ways you may play. So what type of gamer are you?

The Realist

Drake

You are the type of gamer who plays games as if you were the character, you act on your own morals and tend to place a mirror image of yourself in the game. Those characters around you who remind you of friends or who treat you right become the ones you protect, while your enemies are to be afraid of what you might do if your friends got hurt. You try to keep you relationships strong through social interaction, maybe if it means taking your cousin down to the local bowling center. You react as you would in real life and take the first initial reaction to situations, as if this game was real life.

The Survivor

lee

You will survive, wise words. Games like Fallout and The Walking Dead are your bread and butter, the post apocalyptic setting is the perfect backdrop to showcase your survival instincts. It doesn’t matter who is with you or what task might be at hand, you always have this deep thought running through your mind, “How can I get out of here alive?” You will turn on a character and sacrifice them if it means a better chance for your survival, you will complete an errand for someone and receive your reward, but will be the man to turn back around and send them to their early grave. Sure they may have been on your side, but their death means more supplies and a greater chance of staying alive. It takes a lot for you to become attached to most people, seeing as they will only become extra baggage, but in the end you will live on.

The Evil Overlord

GruntildaSkeleton

You take pleasure out of wiping entire towns off the map, maybe from setting off a dormant nuclear explosion? Or venturing through the town yourself with only a firearm in your hands, spilling blood and making people’s lives miserable are your favourite pastimes. People mutter your name in fear as you stroll through areas without a hint of remorse, you want nothing more than to rule the universe and become the richest ruler alive. You don’t want to rule because of power, you want to rule and become the undisputed king out of nothing but pure evil.

The Pacifist

snake

Conflict? You don’t even know the meaning of the word, you just make sure to avoid any kind of physical clashes as possible, you avoid every gun/fist fight and you continue on your merry way. You still complete tasks and survive as possible, but hardly anyone would know you were there. Your strongest asset is stealth, you complete your missions without anyone knowing of your presence and of course without hurting a soul. You find the challenge to be invigorating and the idea of your enemies not knowing what hit them, leaving a smile on your face. Those know of your talents and will seek you out for your abilities, though they may find you if you choose, when you decide to disappear, you stay gone.

The Avenger

kratos

You are a kind soul who will help anyone they can, you don’t do it for money or for fame, it is out of the kindness of your heart. People know of you for being the definition of pure kindness, but you are not one to be deceived or betrayed. See once that happens you turn,  you are no longer that kind soul who was out for destroying evil, you seek vengeance, you seek to avenge those affected by the betrayal and aim to make things right. Those who have betrayed you better watch their back because you are not after explanations as to why they did it, you are after their blood, to set a precedent to those around you.  You may uphold the goodness of the people, but those who betray you pay the ultimate price.

The Hero

chief

People worship you and respect you, not because you have forced them too, but simply because of your noble deeds. You are sort of like The Avenger in this way, but even those who betray you, well you hear them out and find the good in what they were trying to do and in most cases, forgive them. You are that hero who makes their way to the ruler of all things evil, to have him by the throat and refuse to finish him. Maybe he will change his ways? There is always a chance, though when he eventually turns on you again you are forced to end his life. You are not happy about it and find yourself questioning your ways, but it is who you are and nothing anyone does will change that. That is why the people love you, that is why they look to you for help, you are The Hero.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is just a small handful of all the various types of gamers, there are plenty more variations on the rules and many more unique ways to handle every situation. The great thing is, no matter how you choose to play games there is always a game out there that will allow you to play the way you want too.
So what type of gamer are you? If you are not listed above, what kind of gamer would you classify yourself as? Let me know below.
Walking Dead Episode 5: No Time Left Review
Fitting Conclusion
The Walking Dead Series created by Telltale Games will be remembered for providing one of the best emotionally driven narratives, the world of gaming has ever seen. Telltale has continuously captured the true essence of the Walking Dead universe, providing gamers with a memorable experience with a bleak future. Episode 5 “No Time Left” continues this trend by making all your choices from previous episodes matter, making this one of the most personal journeys I have ever encountered. This fitting finale exceeded my expectations, providing an ending I will not soon forget. I am Lee Everett, and I will save Clementine at any cost.
In a way all four episodes were stepping stones to our final chapter, every single decision you have made, and every single choice along the way were all leading to this conclusion. Episode 5 makes all these decisions matter, in a way that makes sense and doesn’t feel forced. The tough choices don’t end there; the choices in this episode will leave many with completely different experiences when the credits roll. These tough choices will make you second guess yourself and then rethink them once again, this is one of the greatest attributes of the series. Choices are never laid out in a way that tells you which is considered the good thing, or the bad course of action to take. Everything in the world is morally grey and Walking Dead allows you to create the story that really portrays who you are as a person, this deep personal connection with the narrative makes every story element that much harder to decide.
“No Time Left” will shock you, it will give you adrenaline, and it will create some intense moments and almost certainly provide you with a lump in your throat. We know how much Lee cares about Clementine; it is his duty to protect her, our duty as a player. Never have I felt the way I have about an NPC like I do in The Walking Dead, Lee is willing to put everything on the line to save this little girls life and I as a player, feel the exact same way. I play the Walking Dead as if I was there, acting the way I would act if I was put in these desperate and dire situations.This relationship between Lee and Clementine is one of the strongest I have ever experienced, and episode 5 allows that relationship to be the main focus of the narrative. This is appreciated, sure I love my fellow survivors, but in the end it is Lee and Clem that steal the show with their gorgeous interaction and heartfelt moments. Without spoiling the episode for anyone, the ending left me messed up, never have I been in an emotional wreck from a game like this one. That isn’t a bad thing; it just emphasizes just what amazing job Telltale has been able to accomplish.
Lee will sacrifice everything for Clementine
Everything in episode 5 feels better than the previous episodes; the voice acting throughout the episode is the best of the series. The desperation in characters voices, the feelings of regret, sadness and redemption all come across brilliantly. Talking is a major factor in this episode, as our characters try to figure out how to tackle the situation at hand, there will be confrontations and many characters will reminisce upon previous decisions. Since the voice work is so natural and well done, it becomes a pleasure to hear the banter between survivors.
In the music department, this episode also provides the best of the series. The use of the musical score to build up our emotions works very well and during one section, there is no music at all, allowing for some dialog to really hit home. These factors allow “No Time Left” to really portray the emotional finale Telltale intended.
One for all & all for one
The narrative is really the main focus of episode 5, with all the events of previous episodes leading to this final instalment. In that sense the gameplay is pretty much mirroring previous episodes, with W,A,S,D all use to explore the small world environments given to you before you move forward through the game. You still interact with objects in the usual sense, but the puzzles elements are very easy. It seems obvious Telltale wanted to allow you to continue on your journey, without being slowed down by difficult puzzles or fetch quests, unlike episode 4. Gameplay in certain sections become very action orientated, they are desperate and you will mash that Q key with every fibre of your body to survive. These action sequences provide the sense of desperation brilliantly and will eventually lead to you conducting some violent actions, these actions really made me think. Once I sat back and realised what I had done, I knew what I did was justified. Maybe even deep down I felt good about what had taken place; because I knew what I had done was for the greater good and not for personal gain, in a world like this that has to count for something.
Episode 5 is not without its problems though, the typical frame rate drops and minor game freezes before some events are still apparent. They seemed to be less frequent than they have in previous cases, but they are still noticeable. They are no deal breaker to the experience and mostly you will be so enthralled by the journey you find yourself invested in, that they don’t affect the overall product. There was one certain key moment in my story that I was not particularly thrilled about, without spoiling for those who want to play episode 5 fresh it is hard to explain. But I feel like this certain aspect could have been approached differently, it does make sense for the character, but I feel there could have been better ways to portray the moment. This didn’t make me like the narrative any less, but it did leave me wondering how things could have been done differently.
There are no happy endings in this world
The Verdict
The Walking Dead series will be remembered for years to come, setting the standard for interactive storytelling, the emotional gaming experience and really showcasing how a licensed product can be one of the best games of the year. This is one journey I cannot recommend enough; it does the Walking Dead universe justice in every way possible and is one of the best games of 2012, hands down. With such a memorable cast of characters, with such strong bonds between one another, Telltale makes you care about their wellbeing. Lee and Clementine are one of my favourite duos in the industry, and their unforgettable journey was one that I will hold dear for years to come.
Telltale has created a masterpiece, one that you owe yourself to experience. This bleak world is full of terrible people, shocking events and emotional outcomes. But it’s created in such a way that you will want to experience them, over and over again.
Analysing The Walking Dead Episode 5 Screenshot
Telltale has released their first screenshot of the highly anticipated Walking Dead Season Finale, Episode 5: No Time Left. Telltale earlier this week confirmed that the last episode will be released November 20 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 & Steam. Are You excited for the episode? Well personally, this one screenshot has forced me to pack my bags and hop aboard the excitement train, to be frank, I am probably the conductor as my excitement cannot be matched.
Alongside the screenshot the latest episode of Playing Dead has been released, host A.J LoCasicio talks with Gary Whitta, who wrote Episode 4: Around Every Corner in the series and director Nick Herman. In this episode they discuss the final episode of the series, and give some hints towards what might happen in Episode 5 of the series.
Brutal.
Now from the screenshot above we can see Lee seems to be in either a lot of pain or has been fighting zombies all god damn day, he looks like he is on the verge of breaking point and giving it everything he has to survive. Is he on the hunt for Clementine? Does he need to kill these zombies to save a friend? If so he is doing a good job, as his shirt is already covered in blood, so let’s assume he has been in a constant zombie brawl for some time.
From the pavement below, we would assume that he in fighting on the streets of Savannah. Possibly near the docks? The pavement looks very similar, but it could be anywhere for we know. Now at the end of Episode 4, Vernon asked the survivors if they came to Savannah via train, could this simple question be to the fact that Vernon saw a massive horde of zombies heading in their direction? If we remember at the end of Episode 3, Lee and his band of merry survivors had accrued a big marching band of zombies hot on their trail, could that horde of walkers now be the very zombies Lee is trying to survive against?
Also Telltale has had some pretty gross moments occur within the series and some downright brutal kills, but this one seems to take the cake. Holding what looks to be either a large kitchen knife or a machete, Lee has sliced the zombies skull directly in half with grey matter and blood releasing for all to see. Could this be the most brutal episode in terms of gore and narrative? We will just have to wait to find out.
We are less ess than four days away before the finale to one of the greatest interactive stories available in the world of gaming, I will be reviewing the finale and am very excited to share my thoughts. If that isn’t enough, Telltale has confirmed that the Launch Trailer for ‘No Time Left’ will be released on Monday November 19, so prepare yourself for a sneak peek at the finale in the coming days.
Also come check out my reviews of episode one, two, three and four, while you wait and see why this series is one of my Game of the Year contenders.
Walking Dead Episode 4 Stat Trailer Released
The Walking Dead series has become one of my favourite games of this year, the intense situations, the amount of realism in the characters and the amount of tailored choices you are able to encounter throughout the experience. Telltale have outdone themselves in every way and with the finale known as Episode 5 “No Time Left”, releasing sometime soon Telltale has released the statistic trailer for Episode 4 “Around Every Corner”.
This trailer will spoil the episode for anyone who hasn’t played it, so be warned. But those who have and are curious to see how their choices stacked up, compared to other players, everything you need to know is located below.
I have reviewed every episode of the Walking Dead series (One, Two, Three & Four) and I cannot wait to share my review of Episode 5, when it is released sometime this month. Don’t forget if you loved the downloadable version of the game, Telltale will be releasing a Gamestop Exclusive Collector’s Edition which will include all 5 episodes on one disc and some added extras.
