Here’s the review for Iron Man: Rise Of Technovore, the animated Marvel movie(Anime) produced by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
“Billionaire Tony Stark, in his Iron Man armor, prevents an attack from a mysterious new foe, but innocent bystanders are killed, including his best friend War Machine, Lt. Colonel James Rhodes. Detained for questioning by S.H.I.E.L.D., Iron Man escapes, determined to find the mastermind behind the attack. Pursued by Black Widow and Hawkeye, Iron Man enlists the help of the ruthless vigilante The Punisher. But can the Armored Avenger handle what he finds when he catches the person responsible and is forced to face his deadliest weapon, a biotechnology called Technovore that could wipe out all life on the planet?”
Iron Man: Rise of Technovore could have been a great popcorn movie, but the story was handled horribly. For the fact alone that this movie was made in the format of one that is anime, that held it back greatly. Ezekiel Stane if those know him from the books is something completely different in this adaption. There was no sympathy for him, nothing appealing, and they tried too hard to make him into another generic supervillain that mindlessly kills. He really had has zero redeeming qualities and there is nothing of the conniving side of him that Iron Man fans are used to from the comics. There really didn’t seem to be any purpose to what was going on and in the end the movie felt as if it was all style and no substance.
The plot had many holes as well. I had to watch the movie twice, and even then I could just barely understand the plot or why somethings happened the way they did. Starting with the fact that SHIELD wants to bring him in for questioning after the attack on the satellite. And when Tony refuses to be questioned to go after Ezekiel himself, they decide to go after him and use lethal force. Nick Fury was actually going to let them take him down or kill him trying, which made absolutely no sense when they made it clear that it wasn’t his fault and that they “needed” him for information on the enemy. The whole thing just turned into a bunch of cat and mouse that distracted from the main plot which was still barely fleshed out. I mean where does Technovore get his powers from? They never answer this.
The dialogue between Pepper and Tony was uninteresting. Their conversations were cliche-filled, they came off very cheesy, and more often then not they were trying to force the fact that they like each other which didn’t feel natural at all. Nick Fury wasn’t that stand out character that we see in most portrayals as he is taking orders and obeying while the Nick Fury we all know takes more action. Not only that but he gives the orders and does things his way. The only 3 characters who had some decent dialogue were Hawkeye, Black Widow and Punisher. Overall they all just seem to be two-dimensional.
However if you are a fan of anime, then by all means this may be the movie for you. The style, actions scenes, character design and plot all fit that style that most anime fans are used to. The movie was basically made to be like one and that crowd might find it more entertaining than those who are more interested in the Iron Man depicted in the comics.
If you buy this movie then I suggest you rent if you care to watch it at all.
