“SAVAGE WOLVERINE” #7 REVIEW

Savage Wolverine #7

Savage Wolverine #7 is a viscerally good time. Sure, there’s not a lot of back story or life-altering character development, but the combination of intense ninja action and a touch of the supernaturally obscure bring a stellar ride.

When a story like this comes along, that doesn’t set out to “redefine” its characters, there should at least be character moments that arouse chills or cheers, and that’s what this issue accomplishes. Both Wolverine and Elektra get to showcase their fair share of badassery.

Wolverine, in particular, gets his comedic moment when he throws a stone at the Arbiters and tells them to look “right here” in his eyes after their long rant about the “Gaze of Shikaru.” Elektra is intimidating as ever, merciless in her fighting of the Hand and chilling thanks to Mad’s visuals when she threatens the man who is trying to kill Fisk with her  bladed sai.

The addition of the Ziro plot feels unnecessary, as Fisk already has the Arbiters as the other outside force to be threatened by. Even the unexpected horrifying reveal at the end of the issue renders the Ziro plot unnecessary by adding in a secondary conflict.

The action is top notch behest of Mad’s obnoxious and explosive pencils. The berserker Wolverine’s energy comes off the page, and his smile later in the issue evokes a feeling of equal parts humour and nervousness.

Packed with enticing action, mystery and the appropriate dose of laughter (albeit nervous at times) Savage Wolverine # 7 is that “popcorn” comic that doesn’t seem to slow down.
