In a recent Q&A session, Lead Level Designer Daniel Schmidt and Game Director Nic Cantin provided some insight as to why the XP system we saw in the E3 demo has since been removed from Thief entirely.
Cantin explained that the main motivation for stealing should be the loot you get away with rather than some XP, especially given that Garrett is already a Master Thief, so logically there is no real need for XP points. He stated it was also a decision made to put more emphasis on the in-game economy, allowing you to purchase upgrades with the money you earn from stealing.
Schmidt pointed out that while they wanted to reward players for the act of stealing within the game, they should not judge players on how they steal given that they want the player to come up with different approaches and methods to obtain the loot. He also emphasized that while players may or may not realize this, the developers do in fact read things like the company’s forums to see how gamers around the world are reacting to various aspects of the game. Given there was an overwhelming confusion about the XP reward for performing a headshot in the E3 demo, the forums played a significant part in having the system removed.
