‘Destiny’ To Receive Taken King Preparation Update Today

In preparation for the launch of Destiny‘s third expansion, The Taken King, a massive update is coming to Destiny this week – today, in fact. Sometime on Tuesday, September 8 (any time now), Destiny will receive an overhaul of its systems. In its weekly update, Bungie says Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players will need around 18GB of free hard drive space for the update. PlayStation 3 users will need about 20GB, and Xbox 360 players 10GB. Keep in mind that this is not necessarily how large the update will be, it will probably be smaller.

Bungie promises a much bigger list of patch notes when the update officially goes live, but here are the big changes. The biggest news from the update is that the new crucible maps and game types will be playable from September 8, when the game updates, to September 14. After that, however, only players who purchase The Taken King will have access to them. Bungie calls it a “try before you buy” system.

The leveling system is being revamped to an experienced based system for all levels, with the level cap for all players being raised to 34. Players who buy The Taken King will have a cap of 40. Your current character level will be calculated by your highest possible light level looking at the gear in your inventory and vault (so most players will start at their current level). Light levels will remain, but they will serve a different, undisclosed purpose it seems. While attack and defense ratings for weapons and armour will be translated into the new leveling system, power levels will remain the same. Weapon rebalancing will also come into effect, which you can read more about on Bungie’s post.

In your inventory, the use of certain items will be changed. Particularly, Motes of Light will be used to grant experience to your weapons and armour, while class specific materials will become a unified Armour Material.

Other changes include a new quest tracker, and increased bounty slots from 10 to 16. Further, all incomplete Year One bounties will be auto-abandoned, but any incomplete exotic bounties will be automatically completed.

For the full list of changes, head over to the Bungie.net.

The Taken King will be available on September 15 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
