Free-To-Play MOBA ‘SMITE’ Headed To PlayStation 4

Hi-Rez Studios has announced that its free-to-play MOBA SMITE is in development for PlayStation 4, with Closed Alpha testing beginning today.

In a press release, Double Jump on behalf of Hi-Rez Studios said Closed Beta testing will begin in early March. Players now have the option to “opt in” from SMITE‘s website for a chance to receive a free Closed Beta invite.

Following a similar model to the Xbox One version, players who link their PlayStation 4 accounts to their Hi-Rez PC accounts will receive an exclusive “World’s Collide” skin for Odin. All PlayStation Plus members will also receive Kulkulkan’s “KuKu4” skin. Finally, players who purchase the PlayStation 4 Founder’s Pack which will be available on the PlayStation Store during the Closed Beta, will receive Ymir’s “C4codemon” skin. The Founders Pack also unlocks all present and future gods in SMITE, 400 Gems, an Ares “Soldier of Fortune” skin, and a key for instant beta access. It will be available for $29.99 USD (or local equivalent).

Interestingly, despite being a multiplayer game, the SMITE PlayStation 4 FAQ page says players will not need a PlayStation Plus membership to play SMITE. The FAQ also says that Hi-Rez Studios is working with Sony to determine if an Account Copy from SMITE PC to PlayStation 4 will be possible, much like it was with PC to Xbox One accounts.

The console infrastructure for SMITE already exists and the console control scheme works well, as proven by the success of the Xbox One version which launched in 2015.

This news comes just a few days after Hi-Rez Studios announced the return of the Oceania Pro League with a $100,000 AUD prize pool.
