Update: ‘Watch Dogs’ Trademark Abandonment May be Reversed

Update:

We have received a statement from Ubisoft regarding the discovery of an abandoned trademark for the game Watch Dogs.

We are working directly with the USPTO on reinstating the trademark for Watch Dogs and it will be active again in the coming days. The matter has no impact on the Watch Dogs’ development.

The original story is as follows below.

NeoGAF user Rösti has taken a screenshot of what appears to be an abandonment of the trademark for the highly-anticipated Watch Dogs.

On the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, the status for U.S. serial number 85642398, or the trademark number for Watch Dogs, reads:

Abandoned after publication because applicant filed an express abandonment.

This likely does not mean the game itself is cancelled. With the approval date of the abandonment being filed this past week on Feb. 1, it could be aimed towards the recent rumors of the game’s Wii U version facing cancellation.

Rösti also points out

Ubisoft currently has in the US six trademarks for Watch Dogs, some for game software and some for other things such as sweatpants and hosiery.

The serial number 85642398, according to Rösti again, however, specifically states it’s a trademark for a “good and service,” or “G & S.”

IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: Game software and electronic game programs, namely, software games recorded on CD-ROM and digital video discs for computers; software games recorded on CD-ROMs, digital video discs, and cartridges for console and individual, portable gaming systems; software games that are downloadable from a remote computer site and electronic game software for mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and handheld computers.

With six trademarks possibly resembling each of the systems Watch Dogs is releasing on – PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC – this evidence supports the rumors of the game possibly not seeing the light of day on Nintendo’s current console.
