GEARBOX TURNED DOWN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A ‘CALL OF DUTY’

If you are a hardcore gamer, then you have likely heard of Gearbox Software.

They are widely known for developing Borderlands, Brothers in Arms and the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines. They also finished  Duke Nukem Forever after its long abandonment. They even worked on the ports of Half-Life on Playstation 2 and Halo: Combat Evolved on PC.

With a company that has such a critically acclaimed streak of making great first-person shooters, why would they turn down the opportunity to create a game in a huge franchise such as Call of Duty? Seriously. A developer that is heavily experienced in making shooters combined with the Call of Duty brand may as well have won the lottery and a half.

In an interview with Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Software,  he explains that developing a Call of Duty wouldn’t be challenging.

“I don’t think there’s anything to accomplish there. I think if I was only in it for the money I would’ve done that. I think to do Call of Duty right you need to do what needs to be done and there are a lot of people who can do that. For us it wouldn’t add to our credibility, it wouldn’t move us forward. There would be no significant challenge that would be gratifying to overcome.

What do you think? Do you think Randy Pitchford wasted a golden opportunity? Was this perhaps his true call to duty? Do you support and understand his decision?

Me? All I know now is that Randy Pitchford and Gearbox Software just significantly gained both my respect and one billion Badass Points.
